Back November 1, 2008 - Saturday Next
We woke up to the sound of rain again, steady and rain and wind. We had pancakes for breakfast with coffee. We drove to the visitor center and inquired about the memorial marker and the name Estevez-he was a prominent worker at the Furnace Creek Inn as it was being built, a Native American with Hispanic intermarriage and surname. The memorial and teahouse is on the Furnace Creek property. The current chief of the tribe here now is named Estevez. The daily report from the Rangers indicate the rain total from October 31 was .04. We sent e-mail via the WiFi network and off we go to Ash Meadows. The rain has stopped for now. We drove out and stopped at the Death Valley Junction where we found a Marta Beckett program scheduled for  tonight. We bought two tickets for $15 each as Nancy has not had a chance to see this program, and Bryan hasn't seen this since he was a kid.
We continued our drive to Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge. The visitor center was closed but we could take a walking tour. We saw various birds and Screw Bean Mesquite trees.
The Crystal Springs with Ash Meadow pup fish were glittering in the warm water, streams running along in the desert next to the grapevines were very beautiful, Cotton Wood Trees were in full fall colors and a man-made reservoir with ducks swimming were very peaceful. This reservoir would be drained to return the area to its natural state. It's beautiful to see this in the desert the weather is warm and humid with clouds gathering again.
