We slept in today until 0800. We had potato casserole for breakfast, one of our favorites! The sky has now turned cloudy. After breakfast we drove down to the lake looking for a place to put the canoe in, not too many good choices as this a wide open part of the lake, windy, rough, and busy, not fun to canoe in. |
The lake is very low due to an eight year drought in this area. The boat tour to Rainbow bridge can not get closer than 2 mile of the bridge and you must then walk. Normally this is only a 1/4 or 1/2 mile walk. They are required to release a set amount of water from the Dam regardless of the in-flow. This is for water supply reasons. Politics plus drought equals falling lake levels.
We did not tour the dam as we have done that in the past, we did look around the visitor center and the exhibits.

We then started to drive to Monument Valley, the sky kept getting darker and threatening to rain hard. Around 45 miles from Page we ran into a very heavy rain and thunderstorm, frequent lightening strikes and buckets of rain! We decided to turn around so we pulled off the road, the storm was coming directly at us with the lightening strikes coming faster. We decided to turn back to Page and away from the storm, we did not want to get to Monument Valley and not be able to get out and hike around. The temperature was dropping fast and the water was running across the road in sheets. |
1330 we stopped at the dam overlook on the down stream side of the dam. This was a neat view, there were dark clouds over the lake but it was not raining. We headed back to camp where it was very windy and dusty and had lunch. |

United called asking for help with SAMC problems. Bryan spent 2 or 3 hours on the phone and computer helping resolve a problem with the London SAMC phones.
We then went for a walk around the campground looking for places to return to at night and take more sky photographs. We then returned to camp for a light dinner of chicken, vegetables from Pipe Springs and salad. |
After dinner we drove to some remote dark places and took pictures of the sky, it was too cloudy to get many good shots nor see the ISS go by. |
We then drove to Navajo point and took some night pictures of Page and the Dam. It was getting a little cold and windy so we then headed back to camp for the night. We played a few rounds of dominoes and then off to bed. |
